Landslide blocking BP Highway near Chaukidanda, Kavre after heavy rain BP Highway blocked

BP Highway Blockage After Continuous Rainfall

Continuous heavy rain has triggered landslides and road-erosion on the BP Highway in the Kavre-Bhaktapur corridor, causing full highway blockage and one-way traffic on adjacent routes. Here are five crucial things travellers and residents must know.

The BP Highway blocked after continuous rainfall scenario has emerged as a serious transportation and safety challenge in Nepal’s Bagmati Province. The moment heavy rain began, the risk of landslides and mud-flow escalated along key stretches linking the Kathmandu Valley and eastern districts. As of late October 2025, major portions of the highway remain impassable and travellers are strongly advised to monitor updates.
Here we break down what has occurred, how officials are responding, and what commuters must do to stay safe.

What happened: The blockage breakdown

Due to persistent rainfall, the highway known as the BP Highway has been disrupted in multiple segments. According to the District Police Office, Kavre, the road is fully blocked in both directions at locations such as Chaukidanda (Ward 6, Namobuddha Municipality), Charsayabensi (Ward 7, Roshi Rural Municipality), Dalabensi (Ward 11), Koksikuna Biruwadanda and Narke (Ward 9).

In neighbouring Bhaktapur district, the adjacent corridor of the Araniko Highway (Sanga section) connecting Bhaktapur to Kavre is restricted to one-way movement only because of slippery, muddy conditions.
The severity is underlined by information such as: a gas-bullet truck became stuck in mud, forcing authorities to deploy a crane and divert heavy vehicles via Jagati, Chyamasingh and Nala.
Other sources report that the highway near the Roshi Khola has sections where the road bed has been washed away and diverted roads are under urgent repair. Ekantipur

Key locations of disruption

1 Kavre district

  • Chaukidanda — Ward 6, Namobuddha Municipality: full blockage.
  • Charsayabensi — Ward 7, Roshi Rural Municipality: multiple landslides.
  • Dalabensi — Ward 11: debris and blocked traffic.
  • Koksikuna Biruwadanda & Narke (Ward 9) also flagged by police for road cut-outs.
The primary river causing concern is the Roshi Khola whose elevated flow has eaten into the road base at several points.

2 Bhaktapur / Sanga-Araniko section

In the Sanga area, the Bhaktapur-Kavre link on the Araniko Highway is under one-way operation due to muddy road surfaces associated with the ongoing six-lane upgrade of the Suryabinayak–Dhulikhel section. The Kathmandu Post

Alternate routes and traffic management

With the BP Highway blocked, traffic authorities have diverted vehicles through alternative corridors. One such route is the Pushpalal Highway (Madhyapahari Lokmarg), which has seen increased usage from eastern districts heading to Kathmandu. For example, over 14,000 passengers used this alternative after BP blockage.
In Bhaktapur’s Sanga section, heavy vehicles are being diverted via Jagati–Chyamasingh–Nala while a crane works to free the stuck truck.
Road-division officials report that the diversion works along BP are underway, and the highway may reopen partially once major wash-outs are addressed (e.g., from Chaukidanda to Nepalthok).

Why this matters: risks and impact

  • Safety risk: Landslides, river cut-outs and mud track create travel hazards, especially at night when visibility and stability worsen.
  • Economic & logistic impact: The BP Highway is a major east-west corridor linking Kathmandu with the Terai and beyond. Disruptions affect goods transport, passenger travel and emergency access.
  • Repair cost & frequency: Previous rain-induced damages along BP have required diversions and large-scale repair (e.g., 2015 JICA-constructed route).
  • Regional connectivity: The one-way restriction on the Araniko Highway at Sanga affects inter-district flow between Bhaktapur and Kavre, complicating commutes, school travel and local commerce.
  • Climate vulnerability: Continuous rainfall triggered this event, underlining how regions with aggressive slopes and river flows (like Roshi Khola basin) remain disaster-sensitive.

Traveller & local advice

  • Check live road condition: Before departure, confirm status of BP Highway via the District Traffic Police Office, Kavre or district administration bulletins.
  • Avoid nighttime travel: Authorities advised closure or restriction from 5 p.m to 5 a.m in high-risk sections.
  • Consider alternate routes: Use Pushpalal Highway or neighbour roads rather than risking the blocked corridor.
  • Plan for delays: Set extra travel time; expect detours and reduced speed over landslide zones.
  • Local communities & commuters: Residents near slopes or river banks should be alert for sudden erosion or water-level rise, and keep emergency contact numbers handy.
  • Weight restrictions: Heavy vehicles may be prioritized or delayed-consider scheduling outside peak hours.
  • Follow official updates: Monitor meteorological forecasts for heavy rainfall, which could worsen conditions.
